What is a Hydrobike?

The short answer:

A super fun bicycle with pontoons that you can ride on the water.

What are it's benefits?

Great question! Hydrobikes are quiet, dry, safe (nearly impossible to tip or capsize), and awesome calorie burners! They're easy to ride, only need about a foot of water, and cruise at about 5 miles per hour, with a top speed of about 10. They even have reverse in case you make a wrong turn or want to go backwards!

How about the specs?

The Explorer models Hydrobikes SD rents weigh 125 pounds and can support 400 pounds on the water. They're 10 feet long, about 4 1/2 feet high, and 4 1/2 feet wide. The gear ratio is 8.6:1 in case that's somehow important to you. They have a 12" propellor with a draft of 18" with a 200 pound rider. The hull draft is 9", and the prop assembly pivots up over underwater obstacles or when beaching the bike.

How do I make a reservation?

Walk-ins welcome! You can also reserve bikes by clicking here for a single Hydrobike or here to rent a tandem Hydrobike (twice the fun!)

Can I cancel my reservation?

If you cancel more than 24 hours before your rental or tour, you will receive a refund or credit (your choice).  No refund or credit will be given if you cancel less than 24 hours before your rental, tour or lesson for any reason, including those beyond your control. You may substitute another hydrobiker provided they meet any skill or experience requirements.

Anything else?

Well, yeah. They offer great scenic views of the Mission Bay. Scientific research shows that using the larger muscles in your back, thighs and buttocks burn more calories than the smaller muscles in your arms. At the same time, using your legs is easier and reduces fatigue. Anyone from 8 years old to 90 and older can ride one of these bikes without training or fear of taking an unexpected dunk in the water. They're actually easier than riding a regular bike on land. The bikes have a console where you can store snacks, clothes or whatever extra stuff you feel like bring along on your ride. And they have cup holders for your beverages.
